This whole “I’m going to start juicing” thing is kind of a big deal to me.
I’ve done my research, formulated a decent preliminary plan, and I believe I am setting myself up for awesome success.[divider]
It’s just that, well, I have ADD. And I’m a busy single mama to three demanding children. I haven’t done so well in the past 18 months with making sure we have healthy eating options consistently available around the house, or with enforcing my preferred guidelines for crap consumption in our family.
I know myself well enough to recognize my areas of weakness and temptation – specifically, feeling like the items on my to-do list are so much more important than taking care of my physical body. And I know that I need to have a strategy in advance to ward off the temptation to grab whatever is quickest and easiest (and coincidentally, typically the least healthy).
The keys for me to be successful as I start juicing, are planning, preparation, and practice.
Keys to start juicing
Much of the effort here is mental. I am designating space inside my brain to manage the logistics of having fresh produce on hand, committing to a schedule that prevents me from grabbing the quickest, easiest snack once I realize I haven’t eaten all day. I’m following the protocol laid out in Power Juicing– a helpful resource as I develop my own plan to start juicing.
For me, preparing to start juicing entails establishing a sense of confidence and familiarity with the nuances of this healthy lifestyle choice. It’s just not as simple as deciding on a whim to make a drastic change – I need to work up to it. I purchased a Juiceman from Target ($79!), cleared off a functional work space on my counter, and started visiting local grocers for the best source of fresh produce. Oh, and I picked up 100+ Juice Recipes!
Practice makes perfect!
I’m not quite ready to jump in all the way, I do need the next few days and the weekend to continue working up to start juicing – however, I’m already practicing! Today, I drank this delicious cocktail, fresh juice from cucumber, cilantro, beet, kale, carrots, ginger, and pear. And I actually enjoyed it!
The practicing part is absolutely essential – I’m learning so much through trial and error that might not be available in a book.
Addressing my issues before I start juicing
It’s no coincidence that I’ve found myself at a place in my life where I need to make some changes. Funny how easy it is to become complacent, even with our highest priorities. I didn’t just wake up one morning rejecting my former healthy habits – no, I let them slip away from me one by one.
